Apple CEO John Ternus says the best AI device is still the iPhone

At Wednesday’s Surprise and Shine event, newly appointed Apple CEO John Ternus outlined the tech giant’s artificial intelligence roadmap: the iPhone is already the premier AI device, with Apple placing a far higher priority on user privacy than its rivals.

These statements, delivered as Ternus succeeds Tim Cook (who transitioned to executive chairman), reveal Apple’s strategy for dominating the AI space. Rather than developing entirely new gadgets tailored for AI, the company aims to position the iPhone as the primary gateway through which users engage with artificial intelligence.

Opening the Cupertino keynote, Ternus defined the ultimate AI hardware as an “intelligent personal hub.” According to him, this ideal device needs to deeply comprehend a user’s individual context, remain continuously at hand, feature a robust processor for local AI processing, and maintain cloud connectivity for larger models.

Ternus added that such a device would require an expansive screen, top-tier cameras, and microphones to perceive its surroundings, paired with impressive battery endurance.

He noted that “you’d want it to be incredibly intuitive, requiring almost no effort to learn. Ultimately, it should integrate effortlessly with your existing gear, applications, and services to deliver a unified experience.”

“Put simply, you end up with something you already know well, as no gadget on earth is better built to serve as your intelligent personal hub than the iPhone,” Ternus declared.

Additionally, Ternus highlighted Apple’s strong commitment to user privacy, observing that rival firms “view personal data as a resource to gather and store.” The remark stands as one of Apple’s most direct jabs highlighting how its AI ecosystem sets itself apart from competitors.

“Frankly, trust breaks down when you surrender control of your data, which is precisely why Apple Intelligence processes information on the device whenever possible,” Ternus concluded.
