A beloved Super Nintendo classic along with its follow-up are officially making a comeback in 2027 through a comprehensive remake. During the 1990s, the SNES was home to an extraordinary library of platformers. Iconic titles like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man X, and Kirby Super Star defined the genre on the 16-bit console. While numerous SNES gems have transitioned to modern hardware over the years, a lesser-known franchise from that era is preparing for a modernized revival in the coming year.
Developer System 3 announced this week that it is working on a fresh “reimagining” of the Putty franchise to honor its 35th anniversary. First introduced in 1992, Putty was a vibrant platformer starring a malleable blue blob navigating intricate levels. After launching on the Amiga, the game was ported to the SNES in 1993 as Super Putty. A 1994 Super Nintendo sequel titled Putty Squad followed, though it failed to achieve a broad international release at the time.
Now, System 3 aims to resurrect the classic series as Putty World. This unified remake merges elements from Putty, Super Putty, and Putty Squad into a single cohesive title. In addition to significantly upgraded graphics, Putty World will incorporate modern twin-stick control options—a feature never supported in the original releases.
Beyond these graphical and mechanical upgrades, System 3 confirmed that Putty World will feature 75 brand-new or “substantially overhauled” stages. Players can also expect 45 fresh enemy types not seen in the original entries. Consequently, veteran fans who grew up playing the Super Nintendo classics should notice substantial changes in this modern reboot. Even so, System 3 emphasized its commitment to remaining faithful to the core spirit of the originals, ensuring the game stays grounded in its retro roots.
Regarding the release window, System 3 has not locked down a firm date, noting only that Putty World is scheduled for Q2 2027. Launching somewhere between April and June of next year, Putty World is currently slated exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 consoles.
