Google launched a streamlined password migration tool for Android on Thursday, eliminating the need to export and handle unencrypted CSV files when transferring credentials between apps.
This updated functionality enables users to effortlessly transfer their saved passwords alongside modern passkeys from one manager to another.
To start the process, users launch their destination password management app and select the option to import credentials from an existing one. Android automatically identifies installed password apps and handles the direct transfer, allowing users to verify the data and confirm the migration with just a couple of taps.
Since passkeys are supported in the transfer, users avoid the hassle of recreating them on their new manager. Furthermore, Google emphasized that this direct handoff eliminates security vulnerabilities associated with plain-text CSV files.
According to Google, the feature is already active across select services, including Google Password Manager itself. Early adoption includes major providers like 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, with support for additional applications planned for upcoming releases.
Devices operating on Android 8 or newer will be compatible with this new password switching tool.
